What in the heck is the Real ID and why do we need it???
*2005 congress passed the Real ID act based on recommendations from the 9/11 commission.
*The goal to make the issuing and use of driver’s licenses as well as other state issued id’s as secure as possible.
~~Starting January 22, 2018- passengers with a driver’s license issued by a state that is still not compliant with the REAL ID Act (and has not been granted an extension) will need to show an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel to board their flight.
~~Starting October 1, 2020- every air traveler will need a REAL ID-compliant license, or another acceptable form of identification, for domestic air travel.
TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling with a companion within the United States. The companion will need acceptable identification.
If you do not have your Real ID by this deadline the following alternatives will be accepted:
- U.S. passport
- U.S. passport card
- DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
- U.S. military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents, and DoD civilians)
Or check the TSA website for the complete list.
